It’s time to leave the city behind and embark on an incredible journey to Sigiriya, known as the Eighth Wonder of the World. Your driver guide will pick you up from your hotel and take you to the heart of the island, between the towns of Dambulla and Habarana, on a massive rocky plateau 370 meters above sea level. From the main entrance, walk through charming symmetrical water gardens, including curved tanks, bathing pools, and little islands with pavilions that served as dry-season palaces. You can either spend a couple of hours here just soaking in this marvelous sight or, if you’re up to it, begin your 1,200-step climb to the top of the fortress. Halfway up the rock, an open-air spiral stairway leads to a long, sheltered gallery in the sheer rock face, adorned with paintings of buxom, wasp-waisted women believed to represent either apsaras (celestial nymphs) or King Kasyapa’s concubines. At the top, enjoy the breathtaking view of the surrounding area before descending to Polonnaruwa, an ancient capital and home to kings. Here, savor a delicious traditional lunch in the company of villagers. After lunch, explore the archaeological treasures of this area, offering a glimpse into ancient times when kings ruled. Once you’re done, you’ll head back to the city and be dropped off at your accommodation.
A1: The climb up Sigiriya Lion's Rock Fortress involves ascending 1,200 steps, which can be quite physically demanding. However, the climb is optional, and visitors can choose to explore the base area and water gardens instead.
A2: It's recommended to wear light and comfortable clothing, preferably dri-fit material, and walking shoes. Bring sunscreen and sunglasses to protect yourself from the sun.
A3: Yes, a traditional lunch with locals at Polonnaruwa is included in the tour package. Breakfast and dinner are not included, so you may want to make your own arrangements for those meals.
